Thanks for your video, it helps me so much for academic writing skill!
Cheers. This all sounds obvious and common-sensical, but... it is so easy to forget. This is a great reminder to get back to first principles and the groundings of life, from which we thrust. All else, becomes a joy.
Walking away doesn't always remove the power the supervisor has ... some supervisors are so inappropriately bad that they'll pursue you after you leave, intentionally damaging your future prospects.
Did this happen to you?
@@James_Hayton I would not have made the comment if I did not have first hand experience with it. Yes. Supervisors can be vindictive and inappropriately cruel. Yes, it was reported to the university. Did they do anything about it? No. Universities do everything possible to absolve themselves of responsibility. Is that professor still employed by that university, No. Is it illegal, yes. Is the power structure not in favor of the student in a vulnerable position, yes. Does anyone care? I sincerely doubt it. Academia is driven by exploitation and lack of accountability. And they hope you are too afraid to speak up - or worse, they hope no one believes you.
@James_Hayton his words were very specifically: "When I say you are done, you are done. " ... that means that he wanted to do everything in his power to destroy my prospects. And when the supervisor is more widely recognized than their student... it makes it very easy to cause such harm.
So sorry you went through that. I wish I had advice that could help, other than to say to others to get out as soon as possible if they're in that kind of situation
@@James_Hayton too much is built into the "prestige " of the PHD with too little protections.
WELP! Already did a month ago 😅 But I want to thank you for providing SO, SO much helpful info & for the online resources (including your course!) During my 1st year, I sought an ADHD & learning disability. I burned out being too hypervigilant & wasn't lucky enough to get through the dysfunctions (mostly external). However, I hope to utilize your strategies in my next ventures after I've recovered! I've already used some recently to get through a research conference presentation 👍🏽
Very helpful! PhD students often feel so overwhelmed by the workload/self-discovery/plus life that is true. Your videos remind me of the importance of keeping calm (acknowledging that it can be difficult) and doing one thing at a time. Thank you!
9:24 sense of self-worth 11:15 took the pressure off without worrying about the end result 12:30 maintain it by keeping others down (about some supervisors) 15:27 simplify
Thank you so much for your videos. I've learned more from you than from my supervisor. After six years of struggling, abandoned by my school and by my supervisors I have a lot of notes and readings but a very few actual work done. Feeling miserable and struggling in other areas of life just as you said the thought of giving up crossed my mind a few times. Your video reforced my resolve to do it no matter what. I will in debt and probably die trying to do it. But I wil do it. I will never give up. Thank you.
The PhD isn't worth dying for... It's OK to decide to keep going, but something will have to change if you want to ever finish. You say you have notes and readings but little actual work done, so have you started your actual research?
@@James_Hayton thank you very much for your reply. I'm trying to aply your lessons in my work. As you said something have to change. My PhD is in the area of the humanities, so my research relates to reading and analysing texts and not to do experimentations. I belive I read everything I need and I have a lot of citations and notes. I only have to write it but I'm afraid I wrote too much in some topics and almost nothing on others. I tend to be too curious and keep reasearching infinitly, but I learn't from your other video to refraing from that. I stopped reading and started actually writing from my own notes and from the citations I got from my reading. But I found I still tend to make long texts about a single topic which I think take my time from the overall writing of the thesis. After watching your video I decided to keep going, and focusing in limite the amount of citations I use for each topic. I always feel afraid of missing something or leting something out. I feel I am traveling alone in a desert not sure if I will ever find an Oasis. Anyway, I don't want to bore you. I know you're a busy person. I just wanted to thank you, your videos means a lot. Best videos on youtube for PhD students. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for this video and all the advices you gave. I really struggle with writing at the moment, can’t motivate myself to start. But the thing is I do not want to quit, but can’t keep going the same time. Stuck in procrastination, doubt my abilities and beat myself up every day for doing nothing. I guess if I let the pressure go I will take it easy and even enjoy writing. I started my PhD in 2016. This is how bad the situation is.
Maybe try doing 90 minutes writing in the morning (before doing anything else, before coffee). No guarantees it'll work, but it's much easier than trying to write once you've started doing other things
I followed your advice this morning and it worked! I managed to write a few sentences and move a few paragraphs around. I found that the biggest obstruction for me is my phone with social media in the morning. Thank you very much for your support.
Try using some app blocking software on your phone. I use Freedom and another program called Cold Turkey on my laptop
Interesting stuff. I thought the frustrations along the academic ladder only happen in Africa! Now I know.
check out r/phd on reddit and you'll see plenty of frustration worldwide! What specific problems are you facing?
14:36 Structure
Thank you so much for these valuable insights!
What do you think of large language models and the possibility for them to 'academicize' our texts for us without altering the contents of the text? Is it possible that writing excellence will lose some value to academia?
Also you say 'there is no other field in human activity .....and to ignore the details' but you know there is a lot of sports related activities where teachers will tell you that, with science to back it up
or would you call those teachers coaches...
If the input is rubbish, AI can't fix it. Academic writing will always be a valuable skill, but AI can be useful for proofreading
Going quickly without thought only applies once you have a high level of skill (for example in a competition setting, where you rely on the skill development you've done in training). If you want to improve or modify a skill, you have to slow down and pay attention (you can't do this in a competition setting)
@@James_Hayton Still though, what if the input is logically sound and also objectively valid, but is just said in grammatically incorrect ways or ways not seen as academical? Let's take 2 imaginary people who go to college, are smart, and lets assume they both write a paper which is logically sound and empirically valid, and both writers manage to communicate their ideas in such a way that the reader is able to fully understand. Now let's say that one writes in a perfect academic style and the other writes with vocabulary which a 12 year old would understand. In current academia, the second submission would be failed (even if the contribution the paper makes to the science field it is proposed to is important). I argue that a.i (in the near future) will be able to academicize the second paper, making it on par with the first. Now i am not saying that writing skills are therefore void and useless, but what i am saying is that person 2 does not deserve to be failed for his paper on the grounds of it being written simply. I understand that the second person would and should be failed in all time before now, but in the modern digitalized era, i think it is time to de-value writing as measure of intelligence

Thank you for this video.
I discovered that AI creates non-existent references whenever asked to give a reference for the material churned out. It cannot be relied upon in that sense.
Very well Explained.. Thank you so much for the video..
I started my PhD journey and was thinking the same way - this is a totally different ball game - this short message has put my mind slightly at ease. Very very good talk! Should be in starter package of all phd degrees. Or maybe you only realize the value of whats discuss in this talk when you're already into your phd..
Thank you
That was literally THE BEST video on the topic. Kudos and many many thanks for this immensely helpful video.
Thank you!! Exactly what I needed
Thank you sir.
Can I just say, I love your shirt!
In my opinion, a PhD is in the apprenticeship (graduate) scheme introduced by the university. The key difference between grad scheme and PhD is, Graduate scheme provide work experience rather than degree. It is much more likely to get included in industry after grad scheme when compared to PhD. PhD is much more complex, longer, and usually provide higher quality of regirous training when compared to grad scheme. There are self funded PhD options but self funding apprenticeship is illegal in many countries.
Last semester I almost worked everyday in my lab while I was also doing a TA duty full time and two core courses, multitasking never worked and I never got any results. Then next semester I decided to do full time research and I only worked 4-6 hours everyday but I really got results. I realised that working efficiently with good rest is more important than

Is it a good practice to link the literature review, methodology, anslysis, discussion, conclusion to the three research qurstions that came from objectives and aim?
They should be linked! The methods, for example, need to be designed to answer the research questions
What if i struggle to write more about my phd topic? I managed to cover everything with 30k.
In my university, the limit of words is 80k. I could able to cover everything about my Phd with 30k! Is that accepted as phd thesis?
You should speak to your PhD supervisor about the requirements at your university. A lot depends on the quality and significance of research, not just the number of words
Really impressive way of writing thesi.Thank you for help

Good presentation

amazing session thank you sir
Why are psychologists some of the worst academic writers? You would think they would know better any one else not to overload and bamboozle readers with superfluous details, but they often do. I accept that might be seen as a sweeping statement, but in my experience, there are very few who write clearly, or write well. Oh and they certainly have some of the biggest egos in science generally.
I loved my PhD. Although looking at the current PhDs i cosupervise/work with it does appear to be more like kicking it and throwing it over the word count to then begin the sloggiest game of pong with the publishers until it finally gets through and then they throw it into a draw for it to never see the light of day again as some revenge for the last 3.5-4 years of a hermit lifestyle, than crafting a principia of your expertise. Ive always told everybody who has struggled with their phd or have been thinking about a phd, all phds are apprenticeships, you then become a "crew member" with your post docs and then you become an academic and work your way up.
I finally understand this topic thanks to you.
Oh now I know😱😰
Great insights and wisdom. PhD or aimply any that one pursue should be based on pure interest that reo validation. After all it is vanity
Thank you so much 👍
👏👏👏
I have to thank you, Dr Hayton. Every time I get anxious before starting to write I come to your channel and watch some bits, it gets me motivated and helps me grow my confidence and mentality about the whole process.
Thanks for the videos, thesis or dissertation writing well explained
